About Citing Articles

When citing articles, take note of the author, article title, periodical title, volume and issue numbers, the date, and page numbers. 

Note that the citation format is slightly different if the article is in print or online, and if an electronic article has a DOI, or Digital Object Identifier.

For each type of source in this guide, both the general form and a specific example will be provided.

The following format will be used:

In-Text Citation- entry that appears in the body of your paper.

Reference List- entry that appears at the end of your paper.

More Than 10 Authors

The general format and example below refers to a journal article with more than ten authors.

When there are more than ten authors, list the first ten followed by "et al."

Note that online journal articles have their own format.

For the titles of journals, abbreviate the significant words, and leave out other words such as articles, conjunctions, and prepositions. Leave out subtitles.

For Example:
The Journal of Biocommunication = J Biocommun.
JAMA: the Journal of the American Medical Association = JAMA
Virology = Virology

General Format

In-Text Citation:
(Author et al. date)

Reference List:
Author AA, Author BB, Author CC, Author DD, Author EE, Author FF, Author GG, Author HH, Author II, Author JJ, et al. Year. Article title. Journal title. Volume (Issue): Page Numbers.
