Putting Ourselves on Display: Rethinking Promotional Initiatives for Greater Sustainability: Collections

The Display Team's journey as we expand beyond the "behind glass" library display.

Marketing Entire Collections

With the launch of the TRU Reads: Leisure Collection the Display Team took on the responsbility for marketing entire collections. Presently we create and install displays on a regular basis for both our Leisure and Children's Collection. We also create social media posts to market our current displays. Members of the team collaborate with Librarians for webpage content and LibGuides to help market our displays. Since we have taken on these two endeavours we have seen an increase in circulation in these areas due to our efforts.

Children's Collection

–The TRU Library has a room dedicated to Children’s picture books to support the Early Childhood Educators program and for the TRU Community to enjoy. In the Fall 2014 a decision was made to promote this collection by creating a monthly theme with some graphic material. The Display Team which traditionally has been made up of Library Technicians and one Librarian has involved Library Clerks who have taken on the responsibility in the creation and installation of displays in this area.
In the Fall of 2014 we started creating table displays in high traffic areas in order to increase the use of the Children's Collection. To date we have created a display of Calecott winner’s and a display of Chinese New Year themed books with more exciting themes to come in the near future.

Leisure Collection

The Library launched the TRU Reads Leisure Collection in the Fall of 2013 to much anticipation. It consists of biography, fiction and non-fiction bestsellers, and graphic novels

To prepare for the launch the display team partnered with the Acquisitions Librarian to promote the new material. This is also the first time the Display Team sought student input for collection development. Now we have a permanent suggestion box available specifically for leisure titles.

In January 2014 we took on the task of creating rotating table displays to highlight the different genres in the collection. To accomplish this we learned how to create posters using simple design methods and PowerPoint software. We also learned how to recognize books by genre so they could be included in future displays.

In January 2015 we placed our TRU New Reads book shelf in a high traffic area which has increased circulation on new material coming into the collection.
