File Naming

File names should be consistent across all data files in your Dataset. Generally, the file name should be machine readable and human readable. The following resource has suggestions for how to name you files according to these criteria:

File Types

Proprietary file formats require specific software provided by one vendor to use. While some data files may need to be in proprietary formats, non-proprietary or open formats are freely available for anyone to use, and easier to digitally preserve in the long term.¹
