About Course Readings & the Reading List Service

TRU Library offers both a Course Readings collection and a Course Reading List Service.

What are Course Readings?

Course readings are books and other materials placed on reserve in the Library by instructors for students to access.

  • Loan periods for physical books in the Course Readings collection are 2 hours, 1 day, or 3 days, depending on instructor preference.
  • Physical items are available to students on a first come first served basis from the Research Help Desk, 3rd floor, House of Learning during open hours. Electronic materials (such as ebooks) can be accessed online 24/7 via a link.
  • Students can search for readings by course name, course number, instructor, or keyword via the link Course Readings, or by using the search box on the Library web page.

What is the Course Reading List Service?

The Library's Course Reading List Service gives instructors and students a single online access point for course reading materials while assuring copyright compliance.

  • Instructors can add, edit, and customize course reading lists (similar to digital course-packs) which are accessible, free, and available to students 24/7.
  • A course reading list can be easily integrated into a Moodle course but also resides on the Library Course Readings listing where students can browse by course name or number, instructor, subject area, etc.

How do I submit a course reading or order a course reading list?

Use the button at the top of this page to submit a course reading or order a course reading list. You can upload a syllabus and/or reading list in any citation style. We will assist you with resource recommendations, checking accessibility, and posting materials.

How do I integrate my course reading list into my Moodle course?

Once your course reading list has been added to the Course Readings page, Library staff will notify you. To add the course reading list automatically to your Moodle, follow the step-by-step instructions listed on the PDF file below:

Reading List Service and Library Support

Through the Course Reading List Service, the Library can support instructors by:

  • Providing links to physical items in the Library Course Readings collection. Physical copies of materials and equipment are available for in-person pick-up at the Library Research Help Desk, 3rd floor, House of Learning Library during open hours.
  • Providing the necessary permalinks to licensed TRU Library electronic resources including ebooks, ebook chapters, streaming video, and ejournal articles
  • Scanning and uploading parts of print books and journal articles provided required sections meet TRU Fair Dealing Policy guidelines
  • Scanning and uploading any information that you have personally created for student use (i.e. test solutions, drawings, notes, etc.)
  • Incorporating links to Internet resources and Open Education Resources (OERs)

The Library can also support faculty and instructors with:

  • When possible, purchasing ebooks or streaming video in support of course reading lists
  • Assisting in identifying OERs in support of course reading lists
  • Requiring TRU EZProxy or Moodle login and password for material to be accessed
  • Releasing Course Reading Lists by a specified date or adding additional password protection (e.g. for test solutions or other information restricted to only those registered for the course)
  • Reusing and rechecking Course Reading List links for accuracy every term
