Information and resources about research data management (RDM) and data management plans (DMPs).

DMP Assistant

DMP Assistant is a national, online, bilingual data management planning tool developed by the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) in collaboration with host institution University of Alberta to assist researchers in preparing data management plans (DMPs). This tool is freely available to all researchers, and develops a DMP through a series of key data management questions, supported by best-practice guidance and examples.

  3. Choose a DMP template. There are several options for DMP templates, each with specific questions to suit the type of research that will be conducted.
    • If there is a template that will meet your needs, choose accordingly.
    • If you are new to DMPs, just getting started with your research, or want a simple plan, choose Alliance Simplified Template.
    • If you would like the standard template with questions that apply to most types of research, choose Alliance Template.
  4. Optional: add contributors. If there are others in your research team who should contribute or read the DMP, add them under Contributors.
  5. Write your plan. Each plan has questions that will guide your data management practices throughout your research project.
    • The rest of this LibGuide has information and resources that will support you in writing your DMP.
  6. Optional: Request feedback from a TRU Librarian. The Request Feedback button will give commenting access to your plan to a TRU Librarian, who will give advice and feedback on your plan.
  7. Download your plan. Export your plan and attach it to your grant application or project proposal.
