OpenAthens

Effective May 5, 2025

openathens logoOpenAthens is the library's single sign-on service that simplifies access to our digital resources for TRU students, staff, and faculty. It allows you to log in once and access a wide range of online materials, such as journals, databases, and e-books, without needing multiple usernames and passwords.

Why OpenAthens?

openathens login iconOpenAthens provides a better way to authenticate access to many library-licensed resources. Whenever you spot the OpenAthens icon, you can use the "Sign in via institution" link to log in. Whether you start from the library databases, Google, Google Scholar, a publisher's website, or a shared resource link, OpenAthens streamlines access to our materials.
Once signed in, your authentication remains valid for 8 hours, enabling uninterrupted access across the web—even if you close your browser or start a new session. Some other benefits include:

  • Unauthorized use of licensed resources can be identified and restricted without disrupting access for others.
  • OpenAthens uses the same secure, modern authentication system as other TRU services like Moodle and Office 365 to provide you with a secure and private browsing experience.
  • We gain insights into resource usage, helping us make better decisions about developing our collections.

What's Changed?

Signing In

You’ll need to log in both on and off campus. On campus, multi-factor authentication (MFA) isn’t required. Off-campus, use the Microsoft Authenticator app to complete your MFA. Sign in using your student/employee email address and password (like you use for Moodle).

Permanent Links to Readings and Resources

If you’re embedding links to library resources in your Moodle courses or other materials, ensure they are compatible with OpenAthens. For links sourced from the Library's Discovery Service, you can revisit the resource and, starting May 5, regenerate the link. The updated link will automatically be OpenAthens-compatible.You can use our Ask the Library form or email (library@tru.ca) to send us your reading list, including existing links and bibliographic details and we’ll take care of it for you.
