Connecting to Library Resources with OpenAthens

Get help connecting to our resources on and off campus.

OpenAthens

openathens logoOpenAthens is the library's single sign-on service that simplifies access to our digital resources for TRU students, staff, and faculty. It allows you to log in once and access a wide range of online materials, such as journals, databases, and e-books, without needing multiple usernames and passwords.

Why OpenAthens?

OpenAthens makes it easier to access library resources securely. Here's how it works:OpenAthens icon for signing in

  • You can start from various sources, like library databases, Google, Google Scholar, publisher websites, or shared links.
    • Look for the OpenAthens icon, use the "Sign in via institution" link to log in from publisher websites and Google.
  • Once signed in, you stay authenticated for 8 hours, meaning you don’t have to log in again, even if you close your browser or start a new session.

More advantages:

  • It helps prevent unauthorized use while ensuring legitimate users can still access resources.
  • It uses the same secure authentication system as other TRU services like Moodle and Office 365, keeping your browsing private and safe.
  • It provides data on resource usage, helping us improve library collections.

What's Changed?

Signing In

On campus: If you're using TRU's Wi-Fi, you'll need to sign in with your TRU credentials.
Off campus: Complete your multi-factor authentication (MFA) using the Microsoft Authenticator app. Use your student or employee email address and password—the same credentials you use for Moodle.

Permanent Links to Readings and Resources

If you’re embedding links to library resources in your Moodle courses or other materials, ensure they are compatible with OpenAthens. For links sourced from the Library's Discovery Service, you can revisit the resource and, starting May 5, regenerate the link. The updated link will automatically be OpenAthens-compatible. If you have any questions, please email library@tru.ca. We can help with your reading lists as well! Use the form below to submit one or an entire list of links that need to be updated.
