Hegarty provides a rationale for the term open pedagogy and presents eight attributes of open pedagogy grounded in the concept of openness and Open Educational Practice (OEP).

Allows users to add an "annotation layer" to websites and online readings easily. Provides tools to make annotations on web pages, save them for later, share annotations with others and, in turn, see the shared annotations of others. Users can also post replies to each other’s annotations, thus creating a dialogue. It allows students to engage with your course readings and each other in a more interactive way than discussion boards might allow.
