CNIE - Beyond the Library's Walls: Our context

Who we are

Brief history of who we are:

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) started as community college in 1970 - then called Carbioo College.   Cariboo College saw 365 full-time students and 200 part-time students who were taught in portables.

In 1989, Cariboo College became the University College of the Cariboo - offering a blend of University degrees, professional degrees and trades training.

Granted University status in 2005, the University College of the Cariboo changed its name to Thompson Rivers University.  TRU now teaches over 11,000 full-time equivalent learners, face-to-face and online, at the baccalaureate and master's levels.

Where is Thompson Rivers University?  TRU is in what is considered the interior of British Columbia, Canada in the city of Kamloops.  Kamloops is 219 miles north east of Vancouver and 385 miles west of Calgary.
