Search Tips

1. Use Truncation!

Truncation is a great strategy when looking for 2SLGBTQIA+ resources. Putting an asterisk (*) at the end of a word or acronym will fill in different endings for it. For example, Canad* will find Canadian, Canadians, and Canada. Because different authors may use different versions of the acronym, you can search for LGBT* to find LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA... any version that starts with LGBT.

2. Consider the past.

A correct and commonly used term online or in queer groups may not be how a concept is discussed in academic literature, or what the terminology was in the past. For example, what might be "Queer Studies" or "LGBT studies" today may have been "gay and lesbian studies." If you cannot find the information you are looking for, think about other ways that the concept you are researching might be discussed, even if it is not the correct terminology.

With this, sometimes looking online (even on Wikipedia!) can be a good place to get started. You can also check out an academic encyclopedia, like this one:
