Education - Doing a Literature Review

Bibliographic software

As you gather a growing body of information, from a wide range of sources, it will be critical that you organize your information.  You will need to find a method for keeping track of the books, book chapters, websites, journal articles, conference proceedings, theses, etc...  Each person is different; some preferring to keep track of their citations on 3x5 cards, while others prefer using bibliographic software.  There are many advantages to using bibliographic software such as RefWorks, Endnote, Mendeley, or Zotero in that they:

  • format citations and reference lists according to different styles
  • allow you to add your own annotations, tags, links.
  • integrate with word processing applications
  • manage references for different projects in folders
  • create accounts or groups that allow you to collaborate with other researchers
  • uploade files and associate them with references in your database
  • export references for use in other tools

Checkout our "Citation Management" guide on the pros and cons of using RefWorks, Mendeley, or Zotero.
