Data Management Plan (DMP)

Questions to ask yourself

Privacy and Security

  • Any special privacy or security requirements? e.g., personal data, high-security data
  • Where will your data be saved?  Server? USB? Encrypted? Filing cabinet (locked or unlocked)?
  • How are you addressing any ethical or privacy issues (anonymization of data)?

Intellectual Property

  • Who will own any copyright or intellectual property rights to the data? PI, funding agency, TRU?
  • Are there any patent- or technology-licensing-related restrictions on data sharing associated with this grant?

Protect

Keep your data secure at every stage of your project.

Ensure that all computer hard drives (and other devices such as USB keys and flash drives) are encrypted to prevent unauthorized access to information.

Use a secure environment to share selected research data with individuals and/or groups. Free cloud services such as Dropbox are not recommended and granting agencies typically prohibit them for research data sharing or storage.  Sync (https://www.sync.com/) is a cloud based storage site that is based in Canada and is a good alternative to DropBox.
